Merlin AI (Artificial Intelligence) – Innovation, Not Magic

Simply put, Merlin AI is the new brain behind Bühler's Sortex optical sorting machines.

As a pioneer in optical sorting innovation, Bühler introduced infrared sorting in the 1970s and brought artificial intelligence to optical sorters in the 1980s with the Sortex 9000—the first machine with microprocessor control. In the 2000s, the company launched Total Care SafeGuard, enabling 24/7 remote monitoring of sorting machines. Now, the new Merlin AI is set to take optical sorting machines to the next level in terms of usability, performance, and product traceability.

Merlin AI is a completely new machine in terms of hardware and electronics. It features color detection, next-generation camera technology, defect sizing, self-learning capabilities, monitoring, calibration, and new sorting algorithms for defect elimination.

Designed to enhance the usability and connectivity of optical sorters, Merlin AI leverages a new algorithm package and advanced learning techniques. According to Johannes Wick, CEO of Bühler Grains & Food, this new sorting technology is "the next big thing" in optical sorting. Wick states, "Merlin AI will move the industry beyond using sorting devices solely for quality control. Instead, it will encourage processors to explore entirely new applications—classifying and qualifying raw materials based on their composition."
